After his father was killed in WW I, Christopher and his mother settled in London. He later moved to Berlin, Germany, where his literary career began. In 1939 he moved to the United States. In 1946 he became an American Citizen, in Los Angeles, California. Rejecting his upper-class background and tired of the war, Christopher Isherwood found peace at the Hollywood Temple of the Vedanta Society, where he soon started helping Swami Prabhavananda in his literary work. His curiosity for Vedanta took Isherwood to India, where he traveled to familiarize himself with its history and culture. It is this period of his life that found expression in his biography Ramakrishna and His Disciples. Isherwood pass away in 1986, leaving a legacy of great literature. |
